Little bit of red, little of peach, little of black. Done with peach! Lots of black squares are in my future though. I didn’t work on any part in particular today, just a little here a little there. I took a break from sitting on the couch with the yarn and sat in my desk chair while chatting with my husband in our office. A fun little change of scenery. I’ve had assistance from both cats along the way of course. Onyx, my black cat, really loves it when I sit on the couch with blanket on my lap. She has a couch-blanket sense I think and it goes off as soon as I sit down. She gets a bit annoyed when I put my work on top of her but she’s going to have to deal with it. I have a good helper picture of Kes, my brown cat featured in a previous post, that I have to download from my phone. Can’t wait to start joining more squares and get closer to completion.
Got a lot done today. His whole hand and what I’ve determined to be the buttons on his overalls. I was a bit stumped at first as to why there was peach in that location. I also took a quick picture of the yarns I’m using.
Worked on a lot of red of his sleeve. Spent the rest of the day raking leaves because we had it ankle deep in the front yard. The weather was perfect for leaf raking; nice, warm and dry.
Before I get into today’s Mario progress I wanted to share this priceless photo of my cat. I stopped by Target to check out their clearance Halloween goodies and picked up this 2 piece pumpkin costume for about $1. I put the collar on her and let her sit with that for a bit, don’t want to throw it all at her at once. She didn’t mind that but I knew the little headpiece wouldn’t go over too well. I put it on and she was pretty annoyed with it but not enough to hide or anything; that’s not her style. I took this photo and a couple others and then promptly removed it. I also put it on my other cat but she didn’t sit still long enough to get any kind of photo worth sharing. They are happy to know that the costume has been packed way. Of course, they don’t know that it’ll be unpacked for Halloween 2010. *evil laugh*
So let’s get to Mario. My usual routine is to come home from school, check the interwebs, and then sit down to crochet. I crank out a bunch of squares in the colors I need but without any thought to what section in particular I will work on. When I get closer to completion I will pay closer attention to how many remaining squares I’ll need. I usually crochet while I watch TV or while my husband and I watch an episode of Star Trek The Next Generation(our current series). The excitement for this project has not yet waned, of course it’s only been 4 days but oh boy I just can’t resist working on it.
Got a lot of work on the hat done. I tried to make enough red squares for his hat and seem to have miscalculated so I started to add onto his shirt. He’s really coming together and it’s pretty fun seeing that happen. I made another mistake where I assumed that there would be a black square in one spot but it should have been red. Again the dreaded scissors made an appearance. The red yarn has a different texture than the peach and black. Not different in a bad way, just a bit thicker so it’s a little harder to work with and keep loose. Can’t wait to start on his body, lots of black in the overalls though. Should be ok though.
I was going to crochet all the little squares and then put it all together. After making a couple squares of about 2″x2″ I realized that this would become a massive blanket if I continued this way. So I had to play around with making a smaller size square. I used the Magic Ring; found at PlanetJune, and through trial and error figured out which amount of single crochets in the ring would produce the right size square. The squares are so small though that they look like odd circles but I knew that once I started joining them the corners would be more obvious. I pulled out all the 2″x2″ squares and began again but this time the squares were approximately 1″x1″.
Excitement got the best of me and I couldn’t wait to start putting it together after completing about 30 squares. I started with his eyes and face, I wanted it to become recognizable as soon as possible. I stitched them together using a large eyed needle and an appropriate yarn color. I joined them by putting the squares back to back and sewing through the back of each loop. I had a couple squares that got turned around in the right side of his face and saw there was a noticeable difference between the two sides of the squares. From then on they were all the same direction.
I couldn’t wait to work on Mario the next day.
