Mario day 1I was going to crochet all the little squares and then put it all together.  After making a couple squares of about 2″x2″ I realized that this would become a massive blanket if I continued this way.  So I had to play around with making a smaller size square.  I used the Magic Ring; found at PlanetJune, and through trial and error figured out which amount of single crochets in the ring would produce the right size square.  The squares are so small though that they look like odd circles but I knew that once I started joining them the corners would be more obvious.   I pulled out all the 2″x2″ squares and began again but this time the squares were approximately 1″x1″.

Excitement got the best of me and I couldn’t wait to start putting it together after completing about 30 squares.  I started with his eyes and face, I wanted it to become recognizable as soon as possible.  I stitched them together using a large eyed needle and an appropriate yarn color.  I joined them by putting the squares back to back and sewing through the back of each loop.  I had a couple squares that got turned around in the right side of his face and saw there was a noticeable difference between the two sides of the squares.  From then on they were all the same direction.

I couldn’t wait to work on Mario the next day.
